Anointing for Burial by Rose Datoc Dall, 15"x28.8" Signed Ltd Ed print canvas
Mary is most commonly depicted as lovingly anointing Jesus’s feet (John 12:2-8). Less remembered is that Mary also anointed Jesus’ head (Matt 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9). Moreover, it’s an ordinance performed by a woman. The disciples rebuked Mary for using Spikenard, an expensive ointment, but Jesus said, “why trouble ye the woman? For she hath wrought a good work upon me… to anoint my body to the burying. Wheresoever… throughout the whole world… shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.” Revolutionary in the face of the pervading cultural attitude toward women, Jesus honored Mary’s devotion and relevance as a woman disciple.
